For a significant part of my childhood, I had wanted to be a space explorer. Gazing at a star-studded night sky is still one of my
favorite ways to reflect. So when Neil Armstrong, passed away, I dedicated one of my poems in his honor.
I composed this poem originally based on illustrations by bluedogrose on StoryBird. StoryBird is a free online resource that
invites people to collaborate to create stories and/or poems based on illustrations.
My poem is titled "Dew, in my garden". An adapted version appears in StoryBird along with the illustrations here.
On an unrelated note: This may be one of the longest poems I have written till date

The best part of this summer: apart from the family trip;
Is a friend I found in our garden, when I'd stopped to pick up a clip.
Of course, I'm very grateful, for a fun holiday with my family,
But I'd never had a pet until, this hare and I clicked instantly!
I like to call her 'Dew', since she doesn't seem to mind,
Her fur is soft to the touch, and her eyes, they look so kind!
Her ears and legs, they're really long, she runs so very fast,
She seems polite, yet very strong. I want our friendship to last!
I asked if she had seen, or by chance had been aware,
'bout that famous race, you know, between a tortoise and a hare!
And this is what I understood, from her reaction to that topic,
She seeks to learn the new and good, her outlook's not myopic!
At first, I gave her cookie crumbs and some chocolate chips,
She didn't seem to like carrots even with salad dips!
One day, when Papa saw me take out some treats and fruit,
He explained that our garden had plenty of twigs and roots.
It seems these are all much better, and just what Dew really needs.
"So, no more experimenting" I said, whatever the garden feeds!
When I'm not around to play, she seems to understand,
Dew keeps herself quite busy and I think that is grand!
I can tell she loves to spend time when I'm in the garden with her,
It's not like there's nothing else to do, it's just what we prefer.
I asked about what else there were of favorite places or things,
She talked about her music band and how she loves the strings.
She has a good ear for music, she'll sway her head and nod,
Whenever the speaker is set to play from our music pod.
We seem to share an interest here, I like music too!
I think it's good therapy when music clears your blues!
Some days, she helps with laundry, spreads out the clothes to dry,
And when she has a new chore, she's says she'll learn and try.
I think it's not unusual, we do the same things too!
Lending a hand to help is fun, I think so, don't you?
Of all the things that Dew shared, the one I love the most,
Is sitting under a starry sky, we both get so engrossed!
We love to watch the night sky, when it's filled with shiny stars,
And sometimes Dew asks me to read the news about Mars.
Besides our love for beautiful stars, we share an aspiration,
To build a garden house on Mars and our very own space station!
She quite fancies the idea of going away in a space-ship,
Won't be until I graduate that I could join her on that trip.
School starts again in a week from now and we are both prepared,
We know our meetings will thin out, our schedules have been shared.
But Dew and I promised, we wouldn't sulk or frown,
Perhaps until next school break, she might go out of town.
I think I have some idea, Dew will be far from grass,
Only if I could stop myself from thinking 'bout her in class!
